400g(2.56mol) menthol is dissolved in 1L toluene, 70g(3.04mol) sodium metal is added, heated and refluxed for 15h to remove excess sodium, 95g(1.01mol) chloroacetic acid is added dropwise in 800ml toluene solution, after addition, stirred and refluxed for 48h. The reaction mixture is extracted with water, the extract is acidified with 20% hydrochloric acid, and the crude oxyacetic acid forms brown oil and accumulates in the upper part. The crude product can be purified by vacuum distillation to obtain 166-180g of product with a yield of 78%-84%.
